Who we are,

The Forge is a club that endeavours to teach individual students a variety of different Martial Arts.

Arts such as Jeet Kune do, Filipino martial arts, Muay Thai, Boxing and kickboxing to name just a few. Our approach is to use modern teaching methodologies as well as the latest advances in the arts to ensure our students are developing a modern skill set. Using these arts we develop students in many different areas, for many different arenas.

Students can choose to train in one particular approach, say MMA however they can also partake in all of them.

We are a friendly club with a unique approach to teaching and training. Utilising the latest approaches in Sports science and research.

What we do,

The most important thing for us is to produce students who excel in the arts regardless of what art they train in. To facilitate this many of our coaches travel globally to learn not only new techniques, strategies and approaches to training but also new methods of teaching material.

We take an academic approach as much as we can using source material that has been garnered by Sports scientists, leading coaches and fighters as well as from other disciplines such as Sports psychology.

For us techniques, strategies and tactics should be effective and functional and be able to withstand pressure testing. No techniques work all of the time and everything can be countered, however students work to develop those that are tried and tested and found to have high probabilities of success. We believe that combative practices whilst having some deeply embedded principles that will not change, do indeed adapt over the years and our training and teaching should adapt accordingly.

How we do it,

We have a central syllabus that all students follow. This syllabus is not all that we teach but rather acts as the backbone for our knowledge. The syllabus is split into ‘Modules’ some of which a fairly generic and cross multiple arts others more specific.

The Module is taught over a number of weeks with a mini pressure test at the end to see how well the module has been learnt.

Each module builds on others and will form a cohesive skill set over time.

Currently we have three key approaches the Stand up game, MMA and Weaponry. You can read more about these in the Forge Classes page.

The Children’s classes also have a central syllabus however they do not have set modules as these are being worked upon. You can read a little more about the progression of an adult student below and more about the children’s progression on the Wolf pack page.

Progression through the Ranks

Students are encouraged to progress through our ranking system. To help in this process our syllabus is in a modular format. These modules are taught in classes with each module building on the prior. As well as classes, students are provided with access to a detailed portfolio of training videos, structured to support your progression through grading belts and development of your martial arts skills. These can be found on the members page.

Foundation

  • The Foundation section is where the student learns the fundamentals. Starting with the basic stances and guards through to basic striking skills, basic clinch and basic groundwork.

If the student is taking weaponry classes then they learn feeding and receiving a variety of weapons.

All modules regardless of the subject are designed to build on each other, each supplementing on the one before.

Intermediate

  • Modules in this section again build on from before, however students take part in a lot more dynamic methods such as pressure testing and what we call ED's, Environmental drilling. This is where we have students pressure test in a particular environment such as going from hands to clinch.

ED's and other pressure testing methods including sparring ensure that what the students have learnt in the modules is not only knowledge learnt but applied.

Senior

  • Here students follow on from before leaving behind modular learning and focusing solely on different pressure testing. Testing there own developed game on a continuous evaluation, adapt and grow basis.

Students here also start to learn how to coach to put back in the pot and help upcoming students.
